Do I really need a softener in Phoenix?

What’s the difference between a softener and an RO system?
A softener treats the whole house and deals with hardness — scale, spotting, soap that won’t lather. An RO system treats drinking water at one tap and deals with taste and dissolved solids. They solve different problems, which is why a lot of homes end up with both.
How much does the whole thing cost?
Installing a softener you supply is $489. A new 48k softener installed is $3,189. A new 5-stage RO system with faucet is $529, or $229 to install one you supply. The whole-home package — 48k softener, RO system, and sediment filter — is $3,889.
My RO system stopped producing water.
Usually the filters or the membrane. A full filter change including the membrane is $179. If the tank has lost its charge, that’s a separate fix — we’ll tell you which it is.
Will a softener fix the taste of my water?
Not really. Softening addresses hardness minerals, not taste. If taste is the complaint, you want RO at the drinking tap — that’s the $529 system, or $189 for a new RO faucet if the rest of your system is fine.
