How much does a water heater cost to replace?
A 40-gallon electric install is $1,489 and a 40-gallon gas is $1,589. A 50-gallon gas is $1,789, and a 75-gallon gas is $3,189. If you supply your own unit up to 50 gallons, installation to existing plumbing is $449. Every one of those prices is on our pricing page.
Why isn’t the permit included?
Permit requirements and fees vary by city across the metro, so folding an average into the price would mean overcharging most customers. We tell you what your city requires and what it costs before we start. Haul-away of the old tank is the same — it’s not in the price, and we say so up front rather than adding it to the invoice at the end.
Should I switch to tankless?
Tankless makes sense if you’re running out of hot water, want the floor space back, or plan to stay in the house long enough to earn back the difference. A complete Rinnai gas tankless install runs $4,289; installing a unit you supply is $1,289. If your current tank is keeping up fine, a like-for-like replacement is usually the better spend.
Can you repair it instead of replacing it?
Often, yes. Electric water heater service — elements, thermostat, anode rod, and a flush — is $389. An anode rod on its own is $189. We’ll tell you honestly when a repair is buying you a year versus when it’s throwing money at a tank that’s already failing.
How long does the job take?
A straight tank swap is usually two to three hours. Converting to tankless, or rebuilding supply lines that were done badly the first time, takes longer — we’ll tell you which one you’re looking at before we start.
What size do I need?
Most Phoenix households are on a 40 or 50 gallon. The right answer depends on bathrooms, occupants, and whether you’ve been running short. We size it on site rather than guessing over the phone.
